Original von Nicolas Grevet, in der L4D-Mailing-List

Hello,

A few weeks (months?) ago, we talked about the various issues of the VPK
system under Left 4 Dead on the Mailing List. I thought these kinds of
problems would have been resolved by the time we'd need to use the VPK
system and there we are... the time has come, the I Hate Moutains
campaign approaches completion, it needs a VPK and suddenly all hell
broke loose.

The VPK creation in itself works great, gives us a 600 MB file
compressed at 200 MB, but we have a fairly large number of issues when
running the campaign both on a server and locally. Two of them being
extremely painful to resolve:

* First, the game can't be launched from a lobby, the lobby system just
time out, even when I force him to connect to our private server. I see
the lobby reservation cookie in the server's console, but then nothing
happens. The lobby just sits there waiting for the timeout. It works
perfectly using other campaigns, official and custom ones, I don't know
what I did wrong, I checked the content of the VPK, every file is in
there and looks similar to what others have done. Any idea?

* Then, the campaign crashes when it reaches the second map. I heard it
could be caused by some custom models but... how to tell apart which
model causes the problem? And is there a solution? It also crashes
halfway through the third map and we have a *lot* of custom models in
there, something like 250 (with probably an average of 70 per map).

Any help would be greatly appreciated, 14 months after the release of
the game it seems that everything is still quite unstable. I didn't
really catch up on the various bugfixes and hacks that have been
discussed on the Mailing List, so there may be a way out that I know
nothing about.

At this point, we are just about to throw everything away and call it a
day, all these problems are pissing us off at a whole new level. We'd
*really* want to release awesome content for the game, but the game
doesn't seem to agree with our goal.

Regards,
-- Nicolas "NykO18" Grevet

PS: I'm adding a few folks from Valve (gathered from the Mailing List)
in the recipients, hoping that it might get more attention from the
highest echelons. But... well...
