At Gamescom 2010 we had the chance to talk to Erik Johnson about Portal 2. The interview took place right after we were shown the new gameplay trailer. Actually this interview should have been a video interview, but due to extreme noise at Valve's booth our microphones only recorded the interview in an unsatisfying quality. That's why we decided to create a transcript of the interview, we are deeply sorry for that, but we hope that you will still find the following interview interesting enough.

We have just seen a presentation of Portal 2, which by the way looked really impressive.
  • Thanks, we appreciate it.
What exactly are the new Source Engine effects? We’ve seen a new fluid effect and especially the shadows looked like you guys enhanced them quite a bit.
  • So, as we began to develop Portal 2, like with all our games we tried to improve the engine here and there, but especially in the various areas we deemed necessary. Since fluids play an important role in Portal 2 we focused on that area. We also worked hard on the dynamic lighting you guys could see in the gameplay video you were shown, but these are really only two of the noticeable things.
HLPortal: And isn't that going to take a hit on the performance of the game?
  • Well, there is always a trade-off in terms of performance when you are building new technology. And like in all our games, having a consistently high frame rate is pretty important. I think this game is no difference. So, the challenge for us is to implement those cool new things and then also to keep the frame rate high, but I think we’re gonna be okay here.
Portal 2 is going to be a full priced game, so, are there going to be any DLCs for it, like you guys did with Left 4 Dead, for instance?
  • Well, we’re definitely going to continue to build things for the game after we ship it. DLC implies a lot of different things; we’re not exactly sure what it’s going to be yet. Like with all of our games we’re going to add additional value to the game after the release.
Are there going to be any new game modes in Portal 2?
  • Ouh, likely yes.
And are they going to be multiplayer or singleplayer based?
  • Well, we do have coop. That’s new from Portal 1. We’ve already talked about that. But there are some experiments we are running that may be added to the game by the time we ship, but we aren’t ready to talk about those right now. But for Portal 1 fans coop is going to be new and really interesting.

Is this coop mode going to feature new and additional maps or does it simply use the singleplayer maps?
  • No, it’s a completely new set of levels about of the size of the singleplayer game. It doesn’t really work to take existing maps because those are designed for two portals and coop is a lot more complicated, you know, there are four portals in the world and it’s build around cooperation of the two people. You will need two people to solve each level of the game, so it’s totally separate from the singleplayer. It does have this kind of logical tie to the singleplayer story though, but that will be a bit of a surprise for people. But you don’t need to play through the singleplayer to understand the coop.
We were wondering if PC players will have the opportunity to play with Playstation 3 players, seeing that you guys implemented Steamworks into the Playstation 3 version of the game. I mean, you already connected Windows and Mac users, so why not connect everyone?
  • We would like to do that. We may do that. The PS3 is something we are working on right now. And it’s nothing that can’t be done. So our goal is for PC and PS3 players to play together. It doesn’t seem like there is any reason why we should not do that. But it’s not running yet, we still have some things to make sure before we implement that.
Have you already made a decision on which voice actors you are going to use for both, the German and the English version of Wheatly?
  • Not for the German version, we have not. For the English version we have.
So, the voice we have just heard in the trailer is going to be the final voice in the game? Because first you said you were going to remove the British voice acting, but that actually caused a lot of negative feedback from the community.
  • Yes, it's the final voice. It’s actually a different actor, but it’s going to stay a British voice.
It’s going to be a rather long game, including the coop and the multiplayer, but are there going to be some kind of competitive elements, so that you get a higher replay value?
  • Well, we’re exploring some kind of things, but right now the singleplayer and the coop will feel like a full product. I don’t think people are going to regret purchasing Portal 2. Having some kind of competitive multiplayer would be something players would like, we just need to figure out what the right design looks like.

And approximately how long is it going to take to play through the whole singleplayer campaign?
  • In terms of hours that’s kind of hard to say, Portal 1 has the highest completion rate of any game we ever shipped. So you know, if we actually look at how many people finished a game, Portal was leading by far. Portal 2’s singleplayer is more than twice as long, so if you think about it, it’s going to take the double amount of time just to finish the singleplayer. Additionally to that, the coop is about that size as well.
Portal 2 actually looks a bit more difficult than Portal 1; the puzzles seem to be a lot more complex.
  • Yeah, we have gotten that feedback a lot and I think it’s because those demos are great for shows, but they don’t include all the training where the player is kind of pacing out and learning new elements of the game. We basically just wanted to show how an expert player plays like. We don’t want Portal 2 to be a difficult game, we want it to be a game that makes you feel smart and that it kinda challenges your brain. We playtest our games a lot and we’re trying to walk the player through the different elements of the game and make him feel just a little smart.
When is a Software Development Kit for Portal 2 going to be released? Are you planning on releasing it before the game comes out?
  • We would always love to release it before, but the reality is that when we get that close to shipping the game we’re so busy that we have our hands full with getting the title up. But I would expect it to come really soon after that.
Well, that's it, thank you.
